About the lighthouse: Pigeon Point Light, with its 115-foot tower, along with Point Arena Light, are the two tallest lighthouses on the Pacific Coast. Located in Northern California just south of San Francisco, Pigeon Point was built in 1872. The 1008-prism first-order Fresnel Lens was previously used in the second Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in North Carolina but was shipped west to give Pigeon Point a bright beacon that is visible 18 miles out to sea. About the lighthouse: The first steel-reinforced concrete lighthouse to be built in the United States, Point Arena was constructed in 1908, after the great earthquake of 1906, and was designed to be earthquake-proof. The 115-foot tower houses a first-order Fresnel Lens, which generates a 2 million-candlepower beacon that can be seen 21 miles out into the Pacific Ocean. Overall lamp height is 24".

About the lighthouse: Built in 1791, Portland Head was the first lighthouse in America completed by the federal government. About the lighthouse: Situated at the tip of Round Island in the straits of Mackinac, this handsome lighthouse from 1895 was discontinued from service in 1947. Being left unattended for years caused this venerable beacon to fall into extreme disrepair and near collapse. Intense efforts by local groups, conservationists and government agencies resulted in the complete restoration of this magnificent structure, which sits proudly today as a focal point on Round Island. About the lighthouse: This 102-foot lighthouse, built in 1884 with a square pyramidal skeleton superstructure, is located at the east end of Sanibel Island. Its third-order lens had to be retrieved from the ocean floor by divers, when the ship transporting it from Europe sank en route. Sanibel is still active today, emitting its bright beacon to sailors and ships in the Gulf of Mexico. Overall lamp height is 25".

About the lighthouse: Sandy Hook, built in 1764 by Isaac Conro, is the oldest surviving lighthouse structure in the United States; as such, it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. About the lighthouse: Split Rock Lighthouse has a 54-foot tower but sits on a sheer cliff 124 feet above the waters of Lake Superior. It had to be constructed there because the waters of the lake in that area were too deep to take navigational soundings. In addition, iron deposits in the area made magnetic navigation inaccurate. Constructed in 1910. Overall lamp height is 24".
